Jimi Hendrix

I'm working on a large painting of Jimi Hendrix as a surprise for my husband. It's in oils and I'm really enjoying the process. You can see it here on my larger painting blog. I posted 3 images to show the stages of the painting. It still has a long way to go.
I'll be working on my daily paintings during drying times.

paper bags

5 1/2" by 7" daily pastel painting, unframed

I took a bunch of photos last night with a bright light casting shadows of the bags, in hopes of creating an interesting composition. This is the one which I thought looked best out of 5 that I took.
I painted it this morning using the photo for reference.

crumpled bag

5" by 7" daily pastel painting, unframed

I couldn't find anything to place in the bag today so I decided to paint the bag itself. Useful things aren't they. While painting various bags I've realized how we'd have to adjust quite a bit without these inventions.

I'm also trying to make better use of them by reusing them as often as possible.

kiwifruit in a bag

kiwi daily pastel painting
5" by 7" daily pastel painting, unframed

For some reason this one was more of a challenge than the plastic bags in the previous paintings which seems a bit odd to me. Since the bag and the table were both brown it took a while to decide if I wanted to use similar hues and I think it worked out fairly well.
When I went to the supermarket yesterday my plan was to buy some cherries to paint but they are not in season here. I went to Whole Foods Market today and of course they had cherries . . . for $6.95 a pound! Yikes. I bought them and they'll taste delicious when I finish painting them.

onion bagel in a bag

bagel daily pastel painting

7" by 5" daily pastel painting, unframed

I had so much fun painting the last bagged still life so here's my bagel in a bag. This just may be the beginning of a series of bagged stuff.

Part of my collection at the Preservation Framer in North Attleboro, MA.

bagged onion

bagged onion daily pastel painting
5" by 7" daily pastel painting, unframed

I searched around the kitchen today looking for my next composition and almost neglected this onion which I bought at the supermarket the night before (I don't always put things away immediately).
The bag was a bit of a challenge. I hope it comes across as a plastic bag. If I were to paint it over again I would paint the entire onion first and then lightly suggest the bag over it.

peeled orange

5" by 7" daily pastel painting, unframed

I've been setting up my still lifes and working directly from them. I used to take photos and use them as a reference but I'm realizing that working from a 3 dimensional subject is a much better starting point.
