blue mountains

abiquiu daily acrylic painting 6" by 6" daily acrylic painting, unframed stretched canvas and ready to hang

I have the day to myself which is extremely unusual. I was going through my photos of Abiquiu, NM and found another I wanted to paint. My focus was on color and I was trying to keep detail to a minimum.
Some of you may be wondering if I'm going to paint pastels soon. Please stayed tuned because I will be working on some this week. I enjoy changing over to a different medium occasionally.

weekly challenge

alabama cow daily pastel painting
4 1/2" by 7 1/2" daily pastel painting, unframed

Week 8 of Karin Jurick's weekly challenge.
Apparently this is what an Alabama cows look like.
This is my second painting that I've entered. There's so much to juggle here at home and I've lost my momentum with daily painting. These art challenges are helping me stay focused.

NYSE dark days

NYSE daily oil painting 6" by 6" daily oil painting, unframed
on stretched canvas

This piece was painted in response to Karin Jurick's weekly challenge. Karin provides a photo on a weekly basis and we all get to paint it. Once we send it to Karin she posts it on her blog.
I've been wanting to get back to oils again and this was a perfect opportunity. Painting this on such a small scale was definitely a challenge. I could have painted in pastels but I wanted to abstract it and I tend to work tightly with pastels.
You can view the other challenge results here at Karin's website.

shell in the sand

shell daily painting 12" by 8" mixed media drawing, unframed

This is an older piece which I worked on when I lived in the Florida Keys. It was a lonely time in my life and I spent weeks painting beautiful but lifeless, empty shells. I didn't realize the parallel until now. It is stippled in pen & ink with the colors layered on in pastels.

eggs in a bowl

eggs in a bowl daily acrylic painting
5" by 5" daily acrylic painting, unframed
painted on wrapped canvas and ready to hang

I was looking through my photos to see what I wanted to paint next and found some of eggs which I had taken in the spring and forgot about.
For some reason I frequently feel compelled to paint eggs. Part of it is the challenge of capturing the wetness. The other part is a mystery to me. . . eggs might create a metaphor in my subconscious for the primordial ooze.

oasis

oasis daily pastel painting
8" by 10" daily acrylic painting, unframed

My son Ben lives in Maricopa, Arizona. It's in the middle of the desert and a city was established in 2004. This is what the entrance of the development looks like except that I left out some unwanted details.

Ali cat

Ali cat daily pastel painting 6" by 6" daily pastel painting, unframed

A painting of my son's cat.
I've been focusing on commissioned pet portraits lately and all I've been working on has been dogs.
I thought I'd try my hand at painting felines. They tend to look cute which is basically why I avoid painting them. I have an aversion to cute paintings but hey . . . they are cute.
My goal in painting a face is to capture the expression which is strongly conveyed in the eyes, one of the most difficult features to paint besides hands (for me).

Abiquiu

Abiquiu, NM daily pastel painting 5" by 7" daily pastel painting, unframed

When I stayed in Abiquiu, New Mexico this is what my view looked like. The colors and the light were constantly changing.
This is the first of many "sketches" for a larger painting. We took many photos of the ever changing landscape so I can represent the light the way I remember it.
